The applied mathematics program

About the program

Our Applied Mathematics program combines the power of mathematics and computers to tackle real-world problems. With a focus on combinatorics, topology, number theory, numerical analysis, mathematical modeling and mathematical physics, we're breaking new ground in mathematical research.

Combinatorics, topology, number theory

These exciting and highly interconnected fields of study are an essential research area that underpins current computer science and information science. For example, the elliptic j-function, a crucial concept in number theory, is a function constructed from an elliptic curve, which is a fascinating geometric object. When expanded into an infinite series, its coefficients are associated with a combinatorial object called the "Monster Group". Many Fields medals have been awarded for research on the elliptic j-function. In our laboratory, we conduct small seminars where members present specialized literature to deepen their understanding. Additionally, we use computers to aim for the discovery of new mathematical phenomena. This approach is highly effective in the data science field, where there is a strong demand for the creation and construction of mathematical theories that are closely related to data science.

Numerical analysis, mathematical modeling and mathematical physics

In this field, we utilize the abstractness of mathematics to reveal the characteristics and mathematical structures of social, natural, and biological phenomena. Our goal is to create and construct new theories in the field of mathematical sciences. Our research not only involves abstract theory, but also the development, analysis, and implementation of advanced numerical simulation methods based on approximation theory. By combining mathematical theory and programming, we formulate nonlinear phenomena mathematically, develop mathematical and approximation theories, and then manifest them through numerical simulation. This approach to research is highly effective in the field of data science, which is in high demand, and we are conducting research to create and construct mathematical theories with a high affinity for data science.
